Why Myakka City Is One of the Best Places to Find Shark Teeth

Myakka City, Florida sits in the heart of ancient marine deposits that once covered much of Central Florida. Millions of years ago this entire region was underwater, home to massive prehistoric sharks like the megalodon, along with mako (hastalis), great white, tiger, bull and lemon sharks. Myakka City and the surrounding areas of Manatee, DeSoto and Hardee County still produce authentic fossil shark teeth from these layers.

The fossil-bearing deposits here formed during the Miocene and Pliocene epochs and have preserved ancient marine life for millions of years. Our dig site gives you access to our own Myakka City fossil layer dirt, and alongside shark teeth we've even found whale vertebrae and prehistoric rhino teeth.
