Relic Reef shark tooth mystery bucket filled with Florida fossil dirt

What's Inside a Shark Tooth Mystery Bucket? (And How to Sift One at Home)

A shark tooth mystery bucket is the closest thing to a real Florida fossil dig you can do at your kitchen table. You get a bucket of genuine fossil-rich dirt, a screen or strainer, and the thrill of not knowing what's hiding inside until you sift it. This guide covers what's actually in a Relic Reef bucket, how to pick the right one, and how to sift it step by step so you don't miss a single tooth.

What's Inside a Relic Reef Mystery Bucket?

Every Relic Reef bucket is hand-packed by our crew with about 32 oz (2 lbs) of authentic, fossil-bearing Florida dig material. Mixed into that dirt are real fossil shark teeth: not replicas, not plastic, and not modern teeth. These are the same kinds of teeth we pull out of the ground around Myakka City, Florida.

Depending on the bucket, you can find teeth from species like:

  • Megalodon, the giant extinct shark and the tooth everyone hopes for
  • Hastalis, the extinct mako-like shark often called the ancestor of the great white
  • Sand tiger, bull, lemon and tiger sharks, the small, common teeth that make up most of a Florida haul

Every bucket is different. Size, color and condition vary from tooth to tooth, and that's part of the fun.

How to Sift a Shark Tooth Mystery Bucket at Home

You don't need special gear. Here's the method we use at the dig site, scaled down for your backyard.

1. Set up your sifting station

Work outside if you can, on a table or patio. You'll want a sifting screen (a kitchen strainer or a piece of 1/4-inch hardware cloth works), a tray or old towel, a small container for your finds, and a hose or bucket of water.

2. Pour a small scoop at a time

Don't dump the whole bucket at once. Pour a cup or two of material onto your screen. Small batches make it much easier to spot teeth.

3. Shake and rinse

Shake the screen gently so the fine dirt falls through. A light rinse with water washes away the dust and makes the teeth shine, so they're easier to see.

4. Look for the triangle and the shine

Fossil shark teeth are usually black, gray, brown or tan, with a smooth, glossy enamel blade on top of a thicker root. Train your eyes to look for triangles. Once you find your first one, the rest suddenly get easier to spot.

5. Check everything twice

Tiny teeth hide in the gravel. Before you toss anything, spread the leftover material on a light-colored towel and scan it again. Kids are often better at this than adults.

How to Clean and Display Your Finds

Rinse your teeth in plain fresh water and let them air-dry. Skip harsh chemicals and heat, which can damage fossils. Once they're dry, sort them by size or species. A small display case, a shadow box or our Shark Attack Wall Shelf are great ways to show off a collection.

How old are fossil shark teeth?
Florida fossil shark teeth commonly date back thousands to millions of years. Megalodon, for example, went extinct millions of years ago.

What age is a mystery bucket good for?

Can I dig in person instead?
Yes. Book a shark tooth dig in Myakka City, Florida and sift with our crew.
